This policy explains what personal information Kind Machines collects, how we use it, and the choices and rights you have. We have tried to keep it plain.
Every section has a short summary from our robot. The summary is here to help you understand it quickly, but the full text of each section is what actually applies.
1. Who we are
Kind Machines Studio ("Kind Machines", "we", "us", "our") designs and operates a family of software products, including Braidsheet and VulkanMM, and this website. This policy applies to our website and our products, except where a product has its own separate privacy notice.
We are a small software studio. This page covers what we collect across our website and apps, and why.
2. Information we collect
We collect the following:
- Information you give us. When you contact us, join early access, submit feedback, or otherwise interact with us, you may provide your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
- Information collected automatically. When you visit this website we may collect standard technical information such as your approximate location from your IP address, browser and device type, and pages viewed, using cookies and similar technologies.
- Information from our products. Our products are built to be local-first. We do not collect the content of your vaults, files, or work, except where you deliberately send it to us, for example by attaching a file to a support request.
What you type into our forms, basic website analytics, and nothing from inside your files unless you choose to send it.
3. How we use your information
We use your personal information to respond to your enquiries and feedback; to provide, maintain and improve our products and website; to send you early-access and product updates where you have asked to receive them; to keep our services secure and prevent abuse; and to meet our legal obligations. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
To reply to you, run and improve the products, and send updates you asked for. We never sell your data or use it for ads.
4. Legal bases for using your information
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we rely on these legal bases: your consent (for example, to send you early-access updates, which you can withdraw at any time); the performance of a contract (to provide a product you have signed up for); our legitimate interests (to run, secure and improve our business, balanced against your rights); and compliance with a legal obligation.
The law needs a reason to use your data. Ours are: you said yes, we are providing something you asked for, running the business sensibly, or the law requires it.
5. Cookies and analytics
This website uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies. Essential cookies are needed for the site to function. We may also use privacy-respecting analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used. Where required, we will ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies, and you can control cookies through your browser settings.
A few cookies keep the site working, plus light, anonymous analytics. We ask before setting anything non-essential, and you can turn cookies off in your browser.
6. How we share information
We share personal information only where necessary: with service providers who help us operate, such as hosting, email delivery, and form handling, and who may only use it on our instructions; where required by law or to protect our rights, safety, or property; and in connection with a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, subject to this policy.
Only with the suppliers that help us run, when the law requires it, or if the business changes hands. Never with advertisers.
7. Where your data is stored
We are based in the United Kingdom. Some of our service providers may store or process information outside the UK or the European Economic Area. Where they do, we take steps to ensure your information receives an adequate level of protection, for example through approved transfer mechanisms such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum.
We are in the UK. Some suppliers may be abroad, and when they are we make sure your data is still properly protected.
8. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. Enquiry and feedback messages are kept for as long as needed to deal with them and for a reasonable period afterwards. Early-access details are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
We keep your data only as long as we actually need it, then delete it. Ask us to remove it sooner and we will.
9. How we protect it
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we design our products to keep as much of your data as possible on your own devices and under your control.
We protect your data sensibly, and our products are built to keep most of it on your own machine in the first place.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you; to correct or delete it; to object to or restrict its use; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority; in the UK, this is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
You can ask to see, correct, or delete your data, or tell us to stop using it. Just email us. You can also complain to the ICO.
11. Children's privacy
Our products and website are not directed at children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
This is not meant for under-16s, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
12. Third-party links
Our website and products may link to third-party sites and services that we do not control. This policy does not apply to them, and we encourage you to read their own privacy notices.
Links to other sites are their responsibility, not ours. Check their policies.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you. Your continued use of our website or products after an update means you accept the revised policy.
If we change this page, we will update the date up top. For big changes, we will try to tell you.
