Always Kind
Every company says it cares. Almost none can tell you what they would refuse to ship because of it. This is our version, and unlike a slogan, you can check it.
You have heard the famous version of this: a three-word motto, "don't be evil", pinned to a wall and quietly walked back the moment it got inconvenient. Sentiment does not hold. It bends as soon as there is money or a deadline on the other side of it.
So we did not write a feeling. We wrote a test. Four plain checks that every machine we make has to pass before it ships. If a feature fails one of them, it does not ship, however well it demos. That is the entire policy. Everything below is just the detail.
- It respects your time 01
- It respects your attention 02
- It respects your ownership 03
- It tells you the truth 04
Nothing ships until it passes all four. Good ideas usually pass. Some ideas we loved have failed, and we dropped them.
01It respects your time
A tool that wastes your time is not kind, however friendly its copy. So we measure the boring things: how many clicks to the thing you came for, how long until the first useful result, how much you have to read before you can act. If a feature adds a step to the common path so it can serve a rare one, the common path wins. Speed is a courtesy, and slowness is a decision someone made on your behalf.
02It respects your attention
Software has learned to farm attention: the badge you never asked for, the modal that jumps in front of your work, the toggle that quietly defaults to "notify". We treat your attention as yours, not as our inventory. Notifications are opt-in and rare. Nothing blinks for the sake of engagement. Given two tools that do the same job, the quieter one is the better one.
03It respects your ownership
Your work is yours. Everything exports, at any time, in a format you can actually open somewhere else, with no lock-in and no exit fee. We will charge for tools, and some will run as a service, because that is how a studio keeps building. We will never charge you to leave with your own data. The door stays unlocked.
04It tells you the truth
A kind tool does not hide its mistakes, or yours. It shows its working, flags what looks wrong before it costs you, and never claims a confidence it has not earned. No dark patterns. No invented urgency. No dialog written to frighten you into the choice that happens to suit us. Honesty is not a feature bolted on at the end; it is the entire relationship.
What we will not do
- Farm your attention, or send you notifications you did not ask for.
- Use dark patterns, fake urgency, or dialogs designed to scare or trick you.
- Lock your data in, or charge you to take it out.
- Sell your personal information, or use it for advertising.
- Ship a feature we would not want to use ourselves.
- Pretend a machine is finished when it is not.
This is a living commitment, not a plaque on a wall. If we ever fall short of it, tell us, and we will either fix it or explain ourselves properly. That is the deal, and it is one you can hold us to: send us feedback any time.
For the longer argument behind all of this, read Kindness is a spec, not a mood.
