naming a house of brands
How we landed on Kind Machines, and why every product gets its own name.
A studio name has to do two contradictory things at once: stand for a point of view, and then get out of the way so each product can be its own thing. Here is how we got to Kind Machines, and why Braidsheet does not carry the studio's name.
the point of view, in two words
Software should be efficient and humane at the same time. “Machines” is the honesty: these are tools, built to do work. “Kind” is the standard: built around the person using them, not the feature list. Kind means efficient, done right, not soft.
why a house of brands
Braidsheet is not “Kind Machines Spreadsheet.” It is its own brand, with its own name, because a great product deserves to stand on its own. The studio is the promise behind them; each machine earns its own identity.
That is the model: fewer, better tools, each invented or reimagined from first principles, each named like it matters. Braidsheet is the first. More machines are on the way.
